Police Bust Kidney Transplant Ring in India
What is this world coming to? It is so sad to read news like this. The police raided hospitals and guest houses in New Delhi on Monday as part of their investigation into an illegal kidney transplant scheme. As part of this scheme, kidneys were removed from 500 poor laborers and were then sold to wealthy clients in five countries, the United States included.
The police suspect that dozens of doctors are involved in this terrible crime. According to the MSNBC News article:
The scam, centered in Gurgaon — a posh suburb of New Delhi — used luxury cars outfitted with blood-testing machines to test donors on the fly as well as sophisticated surgical equipment hidden inside a residential neighborhood.
“We suspect around 400 or 500 kidney transplants were done by these doctors over the last nine years,” Lal told reporters last week.
The primary suspects in this illegal transplant ring are believed to have fled.
