Manic Monday: Affects of Bullying On Kids’ Mental Health
Did you know that bullying can cause your child to develop depression and anxiety? I guess for those parents who have had to deal with their child being bullied at school, this is not earth shattering news. Bullied children are more likely to have anxiety, depression and thoughts of suicide, and prone to social isolation.
A recent study shows that among identical twin pairs in which one experienced bullying between the ages of 7 and 9 and the other did not, the bullied twin was significantly more likely to have symptoms of internalizing problems at age 10.
Dr. Louise Arsenault and her colleagues told Reuter’s Health that This research “really supports the assumption or the belief that being bullied is bad for children’s health.” She also went on to state that the fact that these children were having symptoms such as frequent crying, stomach aches and a fear of being alone, shows that they are in need of psychological help.
Aresenault says that efforts designed to fight bullying should also address the victims of bullying. She says their symptoms need to be taken seriously and they need support also.
