Public Smoking Ban in Italy & Decrease In Acute Coronary Events
Researchers report that after a smoking ban was enforced in Italy, the number of heart attacks and acute coronary events decreased significantly. One year after the ban they found an 11.2 percent reduction of acute coronary events in persons 35 - 64 years and a 7.9 percent reduction in those ages 65 - 74.
The 75 - 84 age group showed no reduction in coronary events. Researchers felt that the people in the latter age group spend more time at home rather than at work and social establishments like the younger age groups do.
This was the first study done in Europe to show long-term benefits to people’s health from banning smoking in public settings. The study also took into consideration other factors such as temperature, air pollution, flu epidemics and time trends that affect acute coronary events.
