The CDC found in a study that nearly 1 in 50 infants in the United States is a victim of nonfatal child abuse or neglect each year. This was the first national study done on this age group, who were under 1 years old.

What is even more shocking is that 1/3 of this abuse and/or neglect occurred when the child was 3 weeks old or less.

The researchers counted more than 91,000 infants who were victims of abuse or neglect during a years’ time. The information was provided through a national data base verified by protective service agencies in 45 states across the U.S., Washington, D.C. and Peurto Rico.

According to federal guidelines, neglect is considered as a failure to meet a child’s basic needs including housing, clothing, feeding and access to medical care. But the counted cases did not include new parents stumbling their way through breast-feeding or making other rookie mistakes.

I can’t say that this surprises me much, however it still makes me extremely angry. How can we cal ourselves a civilized society when child abuse is so wide spread?
